Holiday Season 07: Welcome to CEREBRAL PALSY OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA, INC

Letter from the President:

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I can’t believe the year is almost over and the Holidays will soon be upon us. Christmas is always a busy season at CP because of volunteers that help us with activities and/or purchase gifts for clients and their families! The number of individuals who participate grows each year and I can’t thank you enough for joining us by helping our clients and their families have a joyous holiday. If you haven’t helped us in past years and would like to do so this year, just give me a call or send me an e-mail. We truly appreciate your giving nature!

Our renovations are coming along quickly and soon after the first of the year we will be having a celebratory open house so you will be able to see the improvements and additions that have been completed. There still is much to do --- the grant from the city that helps us fund these improvements is based on a dollar for dollar match - a wonderful way in which you can honor a loved one in celebration of the Christmas Season, would be to make a monetary gift in their honor which will help us match the amount of grant funding we receive. We would appreciate your assistance during this season of giving to help us meet our goal. Our big news in addition to our renovations is that we will be announcing our new name soon. This process has been sheparded by Burdette-Ketchum who have been developing a marketing and communications plan on our behalf.

Our new name will better reflect our programs and the people we serve. We thank Burdette-Ketchum for all the work they have done to help us formulate a name that represents who we are and the range of services we provide to the community. Don’t forget that at this time of year we hope you will make your annual pledge to us – your gifts allow us to provide programs with revenue shortfalls or ones that have been affected by the city and county funding cuts and are in danger. We need your help to continue to serve disabled infants, children and adults by providing therapeutic programs, education, support and advocacy.

I wish you the happiest of holiday seasons and a New Year that will bring you joy!
HOLLY PETERS

Thanks to GREYHOUNDS AS PETS for visiting with our adult clients!

cpFour-legged, Friendly, Furry Visitors

One rainy day recently, the adult developmental training class welcomed visitors with not two legs but four – the Greyhounds as Pets Program brought two friendly greyhounds who are retired from racing, in to meet with class members. The dogs named Sammy and Burt visited with each student and graciously accepted all the hugs and kisses that were offered. Some students were not so quick to warm up to the animals, but they were very calm and gentle, and in no time at all the students were waiting to have their pictures taken with the friendly, furry visitors. Many of our class participants have never owned a pet and we wanted to be able introduce them to dogs and provide an opportunity for them to touch, pet and hug a large and gentle dog. The greyhounds filled that requirement with love to spare and provided a gentle and calm introduction to dogs as pets. We thank Shirley Kane of Greyhounds as Pets for bringing her pets to Cerebral Palsy for a ‘meet and greet’. On their next visit we will introduce grooming and exercising to the menu of what is required when you take on the responsibility of owning a dog.

 Update On Our Renovation

cpHere is what’s happening in conjunction with our ongoing renovation and remodeling project. We are almost done! The final interior phase is underway with the construction of the new expanded computer lab, the daily living classroom/lab, and the expansion of the classroom for our FCCJ basic skills instructor, Carolyn Parker.
The rear of our building is being totally redone –the floor is being raised so that there will no longer be different levels requiring clients to go “up and down”, and the roof is being raised to accommodate new heating and air conditioning units and duct work.

We will have a new kitchen and laundry area to teach the daily living skills which help our clients become more independent.

We have received funding from the Riverside Foundation to allow us to complete the building of our Sensory Integration Room which will be used by the therapists to increase attention span and/or lower the level of hyperactivity in clients who may have sensory integration disorders.

Once the remodeling is complete inside the building, we will embark on the final phase will entail the refurbishing of the outside of the building along with streetscape and landscape improvements. It has been a long process, but one which the staff, clients and the families we serve will appreciate upon completion, when they are able to enjoy and use the new and improved spaces everyday.
