A MESSAGE FROM CEO PAUL BUSSELL

As President & CEO of New Heights (formerly Cerebral Palsy NE FL), every day I observe the determination of the individuals with disabilities we serve as they strive to become more independent in every aspect of life. The committed and dedicated volunteers and devoted family members are to be commended as they seek to enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities. It is wonderful to see that these devoted volunteers and able staff make helping others their priority. Our new tagline is: “turning disabilities into capabilities”-this genuinely captures our real meaning for being here! Our mission is: “To enrich the lives of persons with disabilities and their families and empower their independence and lifelong growth through quality services”.

Partnerships with the United Way, Jacksonville Children’s Commission, Able Trust, Vocational Rehabilitation- State of Florida, Agency for Persons with Disabilities and the City of Jacksonville are most important to our success. A caring community that believes in the support of the individuals with disabilities whom we serve, helps our non-profit organization to continue offering vital programs and quality services. Corporate, foundation and individual gifts are essential to our success. These gifts have a significant impact on the services and programs New Heights offers.

As the downturn in the current economy impacts so many corporations, families and individuals, the demand for our quality programs continues to increase. Would you consider a gift to support New Heights to make a difference in the lives of individuals with disabilities? A gift of any amount will be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to Shari Weitzner, a new Board Member, she is formerly Grove House Founder and Executive Director.

Bank of America’s “Local Hero Award”

New Heights Gus Egerer (photo courtesy of First Coast News) has been chosen for Bank of America’s “Local Hero Award”. He is a dedicated volunteer in our Adult Development Program.

His hobby is compassionately helping others. Gus encourages the individuals with disabilities we serve to become more active. He teaches them to stretch their muscles thus making them more physically able. Gus who is a “Black Belt” & instructs Karate for individuals with Cerebral Palsy, Autism Spina Bifida and other developmental disabilities. Because he has one arm, he is an inspiration , not only for the individuals we serve, but to the entire staff, as well! He teaches self defense so individuals will never be a target of abuse. We’re thankful for his dedication!

 We Visited The Weather Center!

New HeightsStudents in the ADT program are interested in how they forecast the weather and were treated to a visit with Dave Vanore a weatherman with Channel 12 recently. Dave graciously explained how they use trends and statistics to forecast in advance what is going to happen to us weather – wise and showed the visitors the weather center set. They were fascinated to see how the map and other items are projected on the ‘blue’ screen and learned of the instruments used to give us an idea of what the weather will be a week in advance. Michael, one of the program participants wants to be a weather man and was just thrilled to visit the weather station and meet Dave, the weatherman.

Thanks to WTLV/WJXT to hosting the individuals we serve and allowing Dave to instruct them on weather forecasting.

 A Special Visit

New Heights Recently one of the officers with the Sheriff's Mounted Unit came to visit with us. He brought his mount to the agency to tell participants in the adult program how the horses are used to assist other officers, especially when there is a need for crowd control. He told them how he, and his horse had been trained to be ready to respond to any disturbance. The big, but extremely friendly horse allowed everyone to stroke his neck and he quickly ate the carrots they had bought to feed him. We thank the Sheriff's Mounted Unit for visiting with us.
